Dental Crowns

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown may also be referred to as a dental cap. It is a covering or cap that is placed on top of a tooth for functional or cosmetic reasons. The crown will completely cover the visible portion of the tooth that is visible above the gum line. It is designed to look similar to nearby teeth in terms of colour, shape and size.

When is a dental crown needed?

Dental crowns are used to help repair or restore a tooth that has been damaged or decayed. They can also be used to improve the appearance or shape of an existing tooth. A dental crown is also placed on the top of a dental implant, to function as a natural tooth when chewing.

A dental crown may be needed to:

  • Replace a large dental filling if enough of the natural tooth does not remain
  •  Strengthen and protect a weak tooth from possible fractures
  •  Restore a broken or fractured tooth
  •  Act as an anchor to attach a dental bridge
  •  Perform the functions of a tooth when placed on top of a dental implant
  •  Improve the appearance of a badly discoloured or oddly shaped tooth
  •  Cover and protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment

What is the Process?

  • Your dentist will first file down the tooth to be restored in order to make room for the dental crown.
  • A dental impression of the filed-down tooth and surrounding teeth is taken.
  • The impression is sent to a dental lab to make a custom-made permanent dental. It may take one or two weeks for the dental lab to create and send the newly made dental crown.
  • A temporary crown is used until the permanent dental crown is ready.
  •  When the permanent crown is ready, a second visit to the dental office is needed to remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown.
